How hard is it to make mens dress shirts?

My wife has just bought a really good sewing machine, she would like to make roman blinds, curtains, venetian blinds etc… but she would also like to have a go at making shirts with double cuffs?

How hard would this be? Where can she get the patterns from? Where can she get the material from? Also, where can we find patterns for curtains and blinds?

Thanks.

Not sure about the dress shirt

Editors Comment: For how to make mens dress shirts, most good fabric stores stock patterns. Do a Google search or a search in the yellow pages for your local area under fabric stores.

If your wife has good basic sewing skills and can find a good pattern it should not be too difficult to make shirts. Threadbanger show some good instructional videos on making various different items. Keep checking as we will be adding videos to this site.

Why are most mens dress shirts either large or extra large?

Why are most mens dress shirts either large or extra large?

I’ve been going to the Goodwill and other thrift stores looking to get some dress shirts. Doesn’t really matter about the style, color as long as it fits and looks good. (My favorites are old Wrangler or Levis jean, cowboy, striped or plaid.) But at least 95% of the shirts they have are large or extra large.

It’s so hard to find a medium and I would like to know why. Is it just a bunch of old, fat businessmen wearing these things? I went through about 700 shirts today and found approx. seven mediums. It sucks being my size. Err. And good luck if you’re a small ’cause there’s no hope. Found maybe two in that size.

Mens dress shirts are large or extra large because most Americans are bigger.

Where can I get mens dress shirts like Randy Jackson from American Idol?

I need shirts that have the loud print like the paisley one he wore Tuesday night. But not cheesy either. Do you know a good website??

Go to portabella.com I don’t know if they have a website, but I shop there for my man on Father’s Day.

Do all mens dress shirts come with a hole to place cuff links? I know nothing about cuff links and….?

Do all mens dress shirts come with a hole to place cuff links? I know nothing about cuff links and….?

My fiance is wearing a tuxedo for our wedding. I wanted to surprise him with NFL Raiders cuff links for our wedding since it is his favorite team, yet I am not sure if the tuxedo and or the white dress shirt he gets from the tuxedo company will have an area to put the cuff links. Any answers or info on cuff links would be great! I just thought he would get a kick out of them!

You can call the place they are renting the tux from and make sure that he gets a shirt that has holes for cuffs. If you want it to be a total surprise, see if the tux rental store will take the cuff links from you and present them to him when he picks up a the tux. My husband buys shirts that have buttons AND have discrete dual holes for cuff links for more formal/dressy occasions. Congrats and best wishes for your wedding and future together!

Has anyone had trouble finding mens dress shirts that fit right?

Has anyone had trouble finding mens dress shirts that fit right?

My neck is 17-17 1/2 but the shirt at the bottom looks horrible when its tucked in and way too big. I have a bodybuilder physique where I’m larger up top and then my waist slims down to my hips ( V shape body). Just trying to find shirts that are slim or tailored already so that I don’t have to buy 5 or 6 shirts and get them all tailored. Anyone know any stores that sell shirts for men with this body shape or more narrow and body fit clothes.

Thanks! I tried JCPenny which was where I had to return a shirt but they didnt have any custom fit ones so to speak. Just whatever the neck size was pretty much they all are the same in the bottom. I guess I will have to check out Macy’s or another department store else tailor shop/mens wearhouse to see what size I am. Thanks for the responses so far …

Look for shirts that are labeled as “Fitted Dress Shirt” – That’s how manufacturers indicate that the shirt has more of a taper at the waist line than a standard shirt. Most major brands, including Van Husen and Arrow offer fitted shirts, and you should be able to find them at most major department stores – but you may have to ask a sales person to help you, since they are sometimes buried under the regular shirts.

If a fitted shirt doesn’t offer enough of a taper, then you may have to look at on line sellers that specialize in shirts for bodybuilders (such as http://www.hotbodz.com/ )- but the selection in mens dress shirts from the specialty shops is usually quite limited.

Can you guys help me find these mens dress shirts?

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

I’m trying to find a mens dress shirt (french cuff) with a white collar however the rest of the shirt is color or with stripes going down it. Is there a specific name for dress shirts with white collars? What stores/brands make them?

I’m not completely sure where to find these shirts. I would look in more dressy stores, like Express and Banana Republic. If you can’t find them there, I would look in Marshall’s, T J maxx, or Ross, they have alot of shirts similar to what you are describing.

What fabrics should I request for a custom suit?

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

I need your help. While on holiday in Asia, a tailor approached me on Orchard Street in Singapore. He persuaded me to let him take my measurements should I ever decide that a custom suit was for me. Although skeptical, I let him measure me.

For S$150 (which is something like US$125), he makes and ships to me custom suits. He has the pattern books for some of the high-end designers. I tried out his services on some low cost mens dress shirts and I was very pleased. Now I’m going to order a custom suit, but I’m not sure of what fabrics to order.

Any ideas on what I should say?

1) Textures and stripes? What kind of textures?

2) What kind of material? I hear polyester will make it look cheap. I want it to look very high quality.

Please advise!

I love Italian wool, it is very soft, light, smooth and of the highest quality. dark colors with light or faint pin stripes, thin pin stripes with about one inch between them, offer a slender and taller look. I suggest going to a men’s fine clothier, such as Brook’s Brothers and check out the fabrics and styles. Oh two button jackets only, four buttons are out of style and three buttons are fading fast

Brooks Brothers dress shirt question?

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

Brooks Bros offers three sizing options for their mens dress shirts: traditional, slim, and luxury. I’m a pretty skinny dude, so I don’t want any more “traditional” sized shirts because they look too baggy on me. But I was wondering if the slim fit was too tight looking? I’m only asking because I don’t have the time to go try them on and screw around. If it helps at all, I wear the “custom fit” polo shirts. So if someone who wears those also wear the slim fit dress shirts, that would answer my question.

Thanks.

Luxury is your best bet I’m a girl so I buy the women’s shirts and have found that lux fits better than traditional and is not as tight as slim slim may look too gay.
