How hard is it to make mens dress shirts?
My wife has just bought a really good sewing machine, she would like to make roman blinds, curtains, venetian blinds etc… but she would also like to have a go at making shirts with double cuffs?
How hard would this be? Where can she get the patterns from? Where can she get the material from? Also,where can we find patterns for curtains and blinds?

Editors Comment: For how to make mens dress shirts, most good fabric stores stock patterns. Do a Google search or a search in the yellow pages for your local area under fabric stores.
If your wife has good basic sewing skills and can find a good pattern it should not be too difficult to make shirts. Threadbanger show some good instructional videos on making various different items. Keep checking as we will be adding videos to this site.

I would guess that your wife doesn't have much sewing experience as you're even asking where to get fabric and patterns . I would suggest she signs up for nightschool and learns from there, perhaps starting with soft furnishings. She will need pratice before attempting shirts, particularly with buttonholes, they can be tricky regardless of how good your machine is and how easy they are supposed to be to use – particularly 4 step, ones – small buttonholes on mine are nigh on impossible! wish I'd bought a better machine! For patterns it depends where you live, most wool shops have sewing patterns department stores are another source but there are nowhere near as many places these days as there used to be so she may have to order on line. Simplicity, McCall, Butterick and Vogue are all available on line, just search them. Simplicity tend to have pretty easy patterns if she is a beginner, they all have soft furnishing patterns too! if I remember rightly it's free p&p on some of them.

Men's shirts are not overly difficult, but they do require a level of precision and attention to the small details. Vogue patterns has a good selection of high quality men's wear patterns, including dress shirts. McCall's has a few men's patterns, although their styles are sportier. Burda patterns of Germany also has a few high quality men's wear patterns. When sewing for my husband I use Vogue and Burda; vogue being the favourite one for dress shirts. .
For how to achieve a fine, high quality, well sewn shirt I highly recommend the book "Shirtmaking" by David Page Coffin. It has clear easy to follow instructions and pictures of custom shirtmaking techniques. He de-mystifies the sleeve placket and explains how to make a collar that turns perfectly. I keep the book right at my side when I'm making a shirt.
